It seemed a harmless prank at first, to modify benign gut bacteria to produce a gaseous emission that had a tranquilizing effect. Nobody expected it to go so far, or to be such a blight on society. Nobody expected the tranquilizers to be addictive. Nobody foresaw the increasing need for more and more dietary fiber by users. It was sheer luck that sufficient quantities of capsaicin were able to neutralize the bacteria and restore order. But then, withdrawal.
