Actually, in the “Bloopers” reel for this strip, Innes missed Hooja and accidentally hit Dian. Everybody had a good laugh and they quit drawing for the day.
Dian spent most of the “At the Earth’s Core” novel disdaining Innes because he would never come out and clearly state his feelings towards her, not realizing that Innes didn’t want to be forward. Victorian mores at work.
amazingly, something like 58 years later, I remember that passage from the actual ERB novel this was adapted from. I remember going, what’s the matter with that woman, talking to that guy that way! Later on I learned that puzzlement and encounters with women often go together. But—it is a sublime puzzlement.
