They probably realized that they had to stall to work Tantor into the story line. They probably put that bit in with Tarzan helping Tantor without clearly thinking through how they were going to work the rescue in. They never realized, or didn’t care, about the big plot hole where the natives got all of the guns and all of a sudden they don’t have them anymore.
