Snort. Count on Gorrell to magnify one writer to (imputed) all the writers. And to take what she said out of context. As the NYT said at the time: “Maybe read what she actually said”.
Not that Gorrell would read anything so… awful… as the NYT.
Why do MAGA fans hate America? The America of free speech, of critical self-analysis, of striving to understand flaws and fix them? The America that wants to do better? What exactly do they want to go back to?
I’m sure the NY Times writers would have some difficulty with all those flags and their respective countries, but the one country they can have the most effect upon is the one represented by the US flag.
Remind me, which of these flags were flown during the 1/6 insurrection? Remind me, which flag pins were the GOP senators wearing when they voted against investigating 1/6?
Remind me, was an ISIS plot to tell Americans that Covid was no big deal, that they didn’t need to wear masks or social distance, which lead to the deaths of over 600,000 Americans? Was it North Korean TV that sowed doubt about the vaccines?
The the hyper politicization of the flag was used by the right to label anyone who questioned the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq as ‘anti-American’ and ‘with the terrorists,’ but when FOXNews personalities recently called the military ‘too soft’ and ‘too woke’ and GOP senators like Ted Cruz praised Russian military propaganda while attacking the US Military for an ad highlighting diversity and inclusion, no one on the right condemned those statements as ‘anti-American’
There seems to be a lot of confusion about what socialists stand for. I can’t speak for all socialists, but I’ve been a socialist all my adult life and I’ve been active in many socialist organizations. First, socialists generally believe that people are both individuals and also members of social groups. You can’t have one without the other. The kind of theoretical individualism that some political philosophers imagine is just contrary to what it means to be human. “Socialists” didn’t invent this idea: it goes back at least to Aristotle, and I think it’s implicit in ancient thought before Aristotle. Second, as a socialist I strongly favor individual effort and hard work. (I think we need to examine what that means: some people seem to think the only efforts that count have to do with making money; I would argue that there are lots of worthy goals.) One of the functions of government is to make sure that people have the opportunities to make their efforts meaningful. A good educational system that offers equal educational opportunities is obviously necessary, and we don’t yet have that. Good health care for all is another necessity. And so on. Socialism has nothing to do with freeloading. Socialists generally have called for full-employment, rather than the kind of systematic unemployment that capitalism needs. I could go on, but that’s a start.
I don’t find any of them unsettling. After all, they are nothing but symbols. I will never worship graven images like a flag, even though Republicans denounce me as a traitor if I don’t pray to the one featuring stars and stripes.
I find it most disturbing that some people actually dislike the flag because they equate it with Trump supporters! It’s one of the more ridiculous ideas to be put forth lately. People are just losing their minds over stuff like this.
Well the NYT is an American paper, with American readers… and as such what’s happening in America really impacts them. What happens in those other countries has very little impact on the day-to-day lives of Americans
After 5+ years of RWNJ’s traipsing around with the U.S flag mounted in their pick-ups I am annoyed and saddened that our national symbol has been turned into a symbol of hate and intolerance. It will be a long time before I can respect it again without question.

I’m not sure. Il Douche would be willing to dry-hump at least four of those flags…

I’m pretty sure Trump’s America and his vision of MAGA-stan is the most unsettling thing I’ve ever seen.

I think the NY Times writers consider all flags equally unsettling.

Throw in a flag of fascist Germany and the Confederate States of America among those worshipped by Herr Gropingfuror.

as bkincaid pointed out, Gorrell just drew some rectangles on top of some google image searches for flags.
The New York Times article Gorrell is referring to is:
