Lincoln was (unfortunately) wrong when he gave his first inaugural: the traitors and slaveowners were not motivated by any “better angels” when they turned on the Union rather than acknowledge him as President, end slavery, and accept black people as equals. When people show you who they are, believe them.

Mr. Stantis, admittedly a talented artist of great wit, vacillates in the nature of his political commentaries, most often expressing right-wing Conservatism. That of course is the traditional philosophy of his base newspaper, “The Chicago Tribune”. And Scott seems often bound to reflect that in his work. I am not accusing him of dishonesty — nor granting him presumption of artistic objective even-handedness.
Columnist Mike Royko (1932 – 1997) reluctantly took refuge in the “Tribune” when Rupert Murdoch acquired “The Chicago Sun-Times”. He was ever uncomfortable with his position there. The Tribune in general did not reflect his political views. When strongly encouraged to advertise in his column the annual Tribune Holiday Fund, he at first resisted; then complied but put a spin on the columns so that his readers knew his view of the situation. One example, from this December 6, 1991 column:
“As you have probably noticed, this paper indulges in an annual orgy of do-gooderism. It raises money for all sorts of worthy causes through its Tribune Holiday Fund.
“(I think it’s does this because the Tribune used to be known as the voice of Midwestern Conservative Republican Isolationism and Inhumanity to the Down-trodden, and it has a guilty conscience.)” For this column and several like it, read “The Best of Royko: the Tribune Years”.
I see an inclination for Scott to fall in line with the Tribune “philosophy”; and to me it reduces my respect for his other virtues. If GoComics displayed more of his cartoons than the few it does, this could perhaps be better seen.
