I’ve never understood the “number” classification in the USA. In Canada, we call the standard (#2?) pencil “HB”. The harder the lead (lighter) then goes on a scale of “H” (H1, H2, H3, H4) and the softer the lead (darker) goes on a scale of “B” (B1, B2, etc.)
