Theatre is a grown-up version of playing pretend. The audience WANTS to believe in what they’re seeing, even though they know it’s not real. Scenery just helps the audience along.

A good artist knows what they can leave OUT. There’s still distance, distraction and lighting. They might go extreme on perspective and you didn’t notice!

There’s something to be said for minimalism. As pioneer aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said, “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

Theater is all about the art of illusion. Charlotte is a realist & very pragmatic for a Jr. High-aged child. She’s yet to learn how to be the person she is, while accepting how the world can look to others & how she can make them see what they want to see, with set-building & lighting.

Maybe it’s like an optical illusion. Some people see a fence, others see the smallness of their lives and recognize that all their hopes and dreams were meaningless to begin with.
