Despite its name, the festival is mostly in September and ends the first Sunday of October.

I used to enjoy the fall and early winter season. But the incessant PUSHINESS of the retailers, playing Xmas Elevator music starting 5 seconds after Halloween, pumpkin spice everything from coffee to oil changes — I wish they would just GO AWAY and put it back like it was in my youth. Sigh.

Since 1872 – for reason of common weather conditions there – the original Oktoberfest in Munich starts in Mid-September. It ends on the first October sunday.

Lost again in an attempt to … who knows? The festival is/was a celebration of the HARVEST. It has nothing to do with a calendar month of the year. It was a time to celebrate and share the fall harvest.

No question that the kid has nailed it; and the business end of things have hijacked it like every other yearly holiday or event. Don’t forget that the media will be counting beans to remind us that the sales figures from this year’s Octoberfest PROFITS are an indication that … [something read from a list of other predictions as a function of the network].

You’d think that folks in the upper mid-west would notice that the harvest time is upon us with fields becoming cleared daily.

Yeah, I’m getting sick and tired of them pushing pumpkin spice flavored everything as well as pushing the start of Halloween and Christmas earlier and earlier myself. As MAD Magazine put it in their classic article “43 Man Squamish”, loss of half the Flutney for rushing the season.

2 weeks and already tired of the pumpkin somethin that seeps out of every fast food joint, bakery, and grocery store. And I agree with the young person about the Christmas thing.

Question: The once traditional Christmas shopping season with the big sales came between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The profit from that month was counted on to make the year. Nowadays retailers run discounts starting in Sept-Oct, and rack up big bucks.

S-o-o-o-o, why do they complain when December sales don’t show a big jump? They have already siphoned off most of the cream by then. What’s left?

But just think of all the desolate, dragging months that aren’t fall or Christmas(time)! Like a school kid yearning from January to June for summer vacation, some people wish from June to September that the months of shorter days and cooler nights could come sooner and last longer.

I went to a big box store to buy some Halloween decorations yesterday. Halloween is still over a month away. They only had a few things in one small section. The Christmas holiday decorations were everywhere else. :(

Love the new Sam Adams commercial with the guy from Boston, with his Beantown accent, looking at the big sign, excitedly reading it as " OK-To-Beer Fest!"

Hey they’re just following the tradition. Oktoberfest in Munchen (Munich to Americans) has always been held in the last half of September.

Ohio reporting in. One of our local cities used to have Oktoberfest in October. It got moved to mid-September about a decade or so back after they got tired of constantly having nothing but cold and rain for whatever weekend they held it. (You CAN have spectacularly great weather in Ohio in October, it’s just not the way to bet, your odds are much better in September).
