QUOTE:“The estates of the realm, or three estates, were the broad orders of social hierarchy used in Christendom (Christian Europe) from the Middle Ages to early modern Europe. Different systems for dividing society members into estates developed and evolved over time.
The best known system is the French Ancien Régime (Old Regime), a three-estate system used until the French Revolution (1789–1799). The monarchy included the king and the queen, while the system was made up of clergy (the First Estate), nobles (Second Estate), peasants and bourgeoisie (Third Estate). In some regions, notably Scandinavia and Russia, burghers (the urban merchant class) and rural commoners were split into separate estates, creating a four-estate system with rural commoners ranking the lowest as the Fourth Estate."
Facebook seems to be the major element of the Fourth Estate today which is basically a gossip and trending medium that alienates and crushes dissenting points of view. Sadly, serious investigative journalism is dead and what is alive is not tolerated and as stated previously, crushed…..
What I find more troubling than people using Facebook for news, is Facebook’s absurdly biased “Fact Checking”. Facebook was supposed to a completely neutral space, where the views expressed by its members were to be just that: views expressed by its members! People posting dead bodies, horrific images of torture, or overtly racist images, I can understand Facebook simply saying “We don’t want things of that nature on our website. Period.” But by Facebook censoring and “fact checking” comments, they are no longer neutral. They should absolutely lose their Section 230 legal liability protection for no longer remaining neutral, and exposed to lawsuits from their members just like any other company offering a service or product is. It’s their company, they can set the terms of service, but they shouldn’t be exempt from lawsuits.

Censorship? A not-quite-so-free press?

Maybe he should have carved an “All Seeing Eye”, (as in Sauron’s eye).

It does seem as if a significant number of people consider Facebook their trusted news source

That there “swish” was the sound of this going right over my head. If it were a Q, I might have got it.

I do use Facebook for some news… mostly friends and family news. I don’t trust it for any broader level news.

Why should Facebook be held to a different standard than FOX n̶e̶w̶s̶ Entertainment? Controlling content of any media is a 1st Amendment right.

And, I’ve read the strip, and all your comments – and I still don’t get it. I guess I just don’t get out much.

Actually it’s the 6th estate. The 4th estate is print media, the 5th TV, and the 6th internet.

I’d call social media “the fifth estate.”
