The effects of ghost spiders on humans created logical beings of high rationality unlike their usual war mongering and selfish natures. He wanted the same for his creations so using his powers he incorporated a ghost-spider essence into every one of his Houyhnhnms giving them a cool, intellectual, deliberate demeanor. It would be duplicated and carried over like any traits into the offspring.

He was pleased with his project. The failure rate was low, so Horace is one of those that the ghost spider essence didn’t carry over leaving him like a human in behavior.
