The Bistro was just too much pressure which leads to friction and loss of “us” time. Remove the pressure everything looks much better, especially Mary Lou. Now the only thing to worry about is that little annoyance of making a living.
I took a little neighborhood tour yesterday. McDonald’s is closed and is being heavily renovated, as is a nice local brewery restaurant. Wendy’s is open four days a week and only for drive-in or pick-up. My local Subway is gone. A hole-in-the-wall Chinese take-out place was one of the first to disappear. One Indian restaurant folded, another still exists. Yes, there are places that have survived, but I see no pattern to it. And so many “Office Space Available” signs!
What a pity that retirement must usually wait for our inactive years. Gene and Mary Lou aren’t FIREs, of course, but it is a growing movement amongst the young.
went to visit our son & family in the next state we drove, hard to find a bathroom to use . so many closed and the gas stations over used & can not find people to work .
@pschearer – Interesting. I my community t hinges are different. Local restaurants adapted offering take outs. Lost only one. What has developed are hundreds of signsSaying, “Help wanted.” Many small businesses looking for help because former employees living off the Fed’s!
Bistro was a dream, they are smart enough to realize it was not in the end what they wanted whether too much work or too little business. and they are clearly moving on with maybe regrets but looking ahead to some new phase of their lives- for now that is recuperating by the river. Pressure gone, new dreams/days ahead.Lucky they have that luxury…. poor the ones whole have lost jobs and new jobs either not in their area, their skill set or so low paying that it doesnt cover costs- child care, transport, etc.
Just found out the local Subway closed. To add to businesses closing some this year others who closed years ago and still empty. A small shoe store, larger women’s clothing store. However a fitness center has not only renovated it has expanded with another location.

Gene and Mary Lou shouldn’t be letting this situation stress them out so much.

Don’t worry Janis, your son and Mary Lou are fine and really happy. Maybe happier than when they had that Bistro.

A fun little trick would be to throw some ice water on her back and wait for the nice scenery to expose itself.

we can all use a positive pep talk during a difficult time from someone who cares even though we have found our own way of dealing with it.
