On the Home Improvement Channel they turn the camera off for quite a while in the middle.

Last weekend, I replaced the wiper blades on my truck. I am proud of two things: (A) I was actually able to do it (I am not mechanically inclined – I am “dumb from the neck down.”) and (B) it was a 10 minute job that actually took 10 minutes.

Most of my 10 minute jobs take several hours. There is always the screw that won’t come out or the part that got put in wrong because the instructions were misleading and then there are the miles of walking going back and forth from the garage to get the next tool needed (and the subsequent search for said tool) and finally about an hour’s worth of cleanup and putting all my toys (tools) away.

YouTube is my friend – I watch somebody else do it and then make a decision on whether I have the skills to attempt it.

P.S. there are some jobs I will not attempt. My overall mechanical skills are at about a 5 out of 10 with electrical coming in at about 6. carpentry at about 6.5 and plumbing at a negative 3.

There are also about 10 assistants you never see.

They also build an entire house in an hour (including ordering and receiving materials). The shows are an hour, so that’s how long everything takes (even just making "The Perfect Cup of Coffee).

I am selling out my largest shop tools today. Hate to see them go but they need to go somewhere they can be used instead of collecting dust. But, as with much in life at my age, it’s time.

Hard water destroys fittings and they can not be reused. Try your best with a big wrench, but a Sawzall is a plumber’s best friend. Plumbers on TV are working with new fittings. Be prepared to saw everything off to clear out the old and start over.

On the HIC they may actually know what they are doing. At least that is what I tell my wife, when things go a little catawampus on a project.
