Or that the branch is too young and springy. I’ve seen squirrels hanging with paws in the air climbing back up the branch so they could twist around and upright themselves.
My cat was stalking a bird along a tree limb. When she jumped onto the adjacent branch that had the bird on it, the branch simply bent down and deposited my cat into the lake. The cat swam ashore, shook itself off and looked at us as much to say, “I meant to do that, you know.”
There are trees here infected by emerald ash borer. It’s bad enough so the trees have to be taken down. But, the property owners haven’t done it. The longer they wait, the more fragile the wood will become. The trees will become dangerous for climbing, which means the tree company will have to bring in a crane or something, which will make bringing the trees down more expensive.
Rocks hurt to. I got caught in-between two limbs as a kid, fire department had to rescue me. The spanking I got was entertaining to my sibs and neighborhood kids.
Climbing trees are the most cherished moments of our childhood. Nothing beats the experience. Pity childrens now spending hours hooked on to lcd screens.
I used to love climbing trees. There were several ancient walnut trees on our property. I would climb all the way to the top and feel the winds gently swaying the branches. I felt that I could see for miles.Nowadays kids are warned not to climb trees. I feel sorry that they will never feel the sense of freedom.
We had a huge pine tree in the front yard. It was just made for climbing, so of course mom told us to stay off it. Of course we climbed it anyway. When we came inside and she asked if we had climbed the pine tree, we all said “No Mom.” She knew we were guilty because our clothes were covered in pitch. Out came the Lestoil!

Mom’s can suck the fun out of anything. Remember to buy a motorcycle when you’re 18 to show that you love her.

Hey, if they keep practicing climbing, they’ll be ready for rock climbing.

One of the legs might sink into the mud. They could play “Leaning Tower of Pisa” until disaster happens.

Agreed Hobbes! at some point we are expected to stop being care-free and start climbing all sorts of ladders of civilization. Not the same, indeed!

It lacks a certain …… …… …something. Danger? Texture? Soundspace?

The warning label on my stepladder says not to sit or stand on the top cap.

And it should be a kid sized ladder with not more than 3 steps…..

We used to climb to top of small trees and bend to swing to the next tree. We also would climb to top of big black walnut tree with big limbs.

that dead branch has leaves . . ..
mistercatworks about 3 years ago
Considering that they are sitting above the safe stable point on the ladder, probably not much of an improvement. :)

The Wolf In Your Midst about 3 years ago
But how is he supposed to fall out of the tree and get a cool scar to show off to the other kids?!
ron about 3 years ago
Climbing a tree and being scared to climb down is an essential rite of passage for children. Those who don’t live sad, incomplete lives.

Well, I suppose a broken arm isn’t all that bad if you don’t have to pay the Dr and hospital bills. Still stings like the dickins though.
