I have visited sites where they had quite strict requirements, and DID NOT SPECIFY THEM!. So I type in

    QNQ)>|>_8sJ(|=3dIl#bFD

and it responds “password must be between 8 and 20 characters long”

    So I type in

    QNQ)>|>_8sJ(|=3dIl

And it says “Password may not contain characters ()[]|”

    So I type in

    2KNqhjbwzPPPfuUa9B

And it says “Password must contain at least one punctuation character, one numeric character”

    So I type in

    2KNqhjbwzPPPfuUa9@

And it says “Password may not contain more than two of the same character”

    So I call them

Ponder this. What if I change my password and they crack that one. Should I have changed it from something that was working?

What? No whimpers? It won’t be secure if you don’t include whimpers!

I think that password programs should also accept characters typed while holding down the CTRL or ALT key.

I am put off by sites that restrict you to ONLY 20 characters. Most of my passwords are at least that long.

Even a site as prominent as USAA limits one to 20 characters. Fortunately, they ignore all typed after the 20th character so my phrases still make sense to me and I don’t have to stop in mid word or mid sentence.

Another self-defeating security measure. Forcing you to write down your password makes it less secure in my opinion. Who can remember the character salad you have to use?

Noseprint recognition might work better. Sniff the screen.

That’s bad site design. I’m amazed at how poor some sites are. When I was teaching site design ¼ century ago my kids did better.

Most people would rather clean a toilet than create a new password. :)

Reminded of Umberto Eco’s "Foucault’s Pendulum, in which the main character is trying to access a computer and is presented with “Do you know the password?” Ultimately, he learns to simply answer the question.
