I’m glad we don’t have that in Queensland. When I lived in England I would hear “put your clock forward” or “put your clock back”, but that never made sense. My clocks didn’t go forwards or backwrds. They just went round and round.
Daylight savings wastes two hour of my life each year. In the fall I gain an hour but then spend an hour changing all the clocks (30) that need to changed manually. Net 0. In the spring I lose an hour and lose another hour changing those clocks again. Net -2. I don’t care, standard or daylight savings, let’s just pick one and stick with it year round.
Hi all, I hope to get on tomorrow for comics and just an update “the test results were NOT good”. Lots of stuff wrong. Next step is x-rays and Cat Scans and a list of other tests.
I think maybe what Arlo is referring to is the “you can sleep an extra hour” or “you get one less hour of sleep” conundrum. In fact the first mention I saw on the Web this year said we’d lose an hour of sleep by setting the clocks back. The way it’s easiest for me to understand is… I go to bed at my usual time, and if I sleep about the same amount of time, I get up to the clock telling me it’s one hour earlier, so I got an extra hour, I didn’t lose it…
Here in Ontario we want to lock into one time. But the Gov says we need to agree with New York state and Quebec. Why do we need to do that? They do not care about us? Just change it and let people adapt. I’m sick of cowering and making others happy.
I wish they would stay on DST permanently. Dogs that have to be walked do not look at the clock. So owners and their pets have to gradually adjust to the new time twice a year which is a PITA.
Everybody wants to stop changing the time, but they can’t agree on which one should be permanent. Maybe they would like it better if it happened in the middle of the week and was a holiday twice a year. As for changing clocks, the power goes out several times a year here, so that nothing unusual.
The time change sucks because the herd, pack or clowder around here does not change their clocks. The doggos wanted morning walkies at 5:00 and the cats wanted first breakfast and all the rest. Fortunately it is cloudy and they did not get up too early, but early nonetheless. I hate the time change.
We got to change all the clocks today, now they’re forecasting 100kmh winds tomorrow, so we get to do it all again on Tuesday after the power comes back on!
The Delaware state legislature, last session, voted to go to ATLANTIC time zone, but the neighboring states (Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsyvania) also have to vote to do the same thing. I never did find out the reasoning for changing to Atlantic. We are currently in Eastern time zone.
Europe changes a week earlier than we do. I was in Paris one fall and had to change two watches back, change them ahead when I got home, then change them back four days later. The friend I was with never changes her watch from EST, so in order to know what time it was where we were, she would add six and subtract one. (Yes, she is aware of the number five, but doing it that way confused us both.)
I called my 93 yo mom who lives in an assisted living residence Sunday night for our weekly call. (Mom – “I can’t understand what you are saying.” Me -“I’ll turn the speakerphone” Sit there do nothing. I ask – “Is it better?” “Oh yes, that’s great, I can hear you now.” Makes no sense to me at all).
As we are talking she asks me what time it is. I tell her. She tells me that half of the clocks are that time and the other half are later. I remind her that it first Sunday in November and we are “falling back”. “Oh, I thought some of the clocks were going bad.”
I tell her – over and over – if she is not sure of the time to turn on the TV and look at any of the 24 hour news channels as they all have the time on the screen all the time.
I have been an amateur radio hobbyist since junior high school, this would be during the Johnson administration. I run on Universal time, also know a Zulu Time or Greenwich Mean Time. Local time is an abstract as the radio waves all run on Universal time. Just an illusion run by smoke and mirrors.
Pay no attention to that clock on the wall, it is not 1540 local, it is 2040 Zulu…

I think Janis is talking about giving back the hour of daylight that we gained. Even SWMBO got tripped up and said something about fall forward.

Nothing was gained or lost – there was 24 hours* in each period. Just the labels changed for a bit.
*more or less.

Bonus cuddle time before going to church! Granted, the change in spring is different altogether…

Apparently our Congress is too inept to take a 5-minute vote to change this widely hated situation.

As a retired person, time (of day) is less of a concern, and I can watch church via YouTube whenever I’m not up for it.

It is not possible to gain or lose time. If you are alive, you have time right now. Same as every other person on Earth.

Today is 25 hrs long, the longest day of the year. In Spring it’s the shortest day at 23 hrs long. Every other day is 24 hrs.
The issue people have is the hrs the sun is up.
