The owl looked like it was getting ready for Halloween.

Sound advice, but therein lies a lifetime commitment. It does get wearying, but there is much work to do to change the world.

I get mighty tired of picking up the litter along my little stretch of rural road, but I don’t notice anyone else stepping up to the plate so I’ll keep on keeping on. Recycling is difficult in this area as there is very little municipal support for the programs, and even less money … but we still find a way to recycle far more than the items we put in the regular trash. When we married, we decided that disposable plates, cups and plastics didn’t need to be a part of our budget (we were broke!); I’m not sure how many times our dishes have been washed, but I’m betting 35+ years has saved a whole lot of space in landfills. When re-usable grocery bags came on the scene, I made it a habit to keep several in my car … and if I forgot, I also made myself buy a new one to hold that day’s purchases. The occasional plastic bag shows up, but it gets saved to recycle or reuse too.

All of my efforts are small things in and of themselves, but I’d like to think they are all making a difference and a change.

You can certainly change how you view and respond to it.

Isn’t this promoting it’s my way or the highway mentality? The world needs to change just because it don’t see things the way I do? If I disagree with something that is a universal truth, then the world must live the lie I’m living?

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.

For those of you who never read responses…this is what I posted on Hawkguy 402…Nope! I think Snow is suggesting that we can be a catalyst for positive change in the world rather than sitting passively and raging because of things people have done around us. Anyone can turn this into “My way or the highway” if they so choose. Snow never chooses that.

Good question. It’s the old nature vs. nurture thing. Sometimes environmental influence is too strong. E. g. the Nietzsche thing about the things that don’t kill you. Survivors often get PTSD. Also, there’s a pretty strong argument for the owl’s point of view. It’s probably self destructive to respond to the vileness of life with chronic anger but it’s not wrong to get angry.
