Since we are taking a break from that totally uninteresting kibble opera, here’s a nice listing of the ranks of Imperial concubines. I’m sure you’ll need this information some day.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Chinese_harem_system#Ranking_system_for_Emperors

Typical Chinese obsession with hierarchy and bureacracy.

In modern China, rich men often acquire glossy young women as concubines as well as having wives. It gives the men face, and provides some of the necessities of life for the young women.

I have heard that similar arrangements are not unheard of in other parts of the world.

In my parent’s house in Temple Terrace FL (circa 1970 ranch house CBS structure), the kitchen had fluorescent lighting which was above a false ceiling with frosted plastic panels. The cupboards were below this ceiling and were installed so that the tops were at level with the translucent panels. Anyhow, my Mom and Dad got one of those 1970’s side by side Craftsmen fridges which reached to within a foot of the ceiling. It did not take long before 2 of my Mom’s cat’s, a blue point Siamese named Smokey and a Calico named Cleo, found that they could find a whole new world to explore by pushing up on the plastic panels and sit on top of the cupboard and cause all sorts of mischief. The first time this happened, my Mom thought the cats got out of the house but they came down when they heard the can opener! Later on, occasional disaster would strike every now and then when a couple of panels would be knocked to the floor by the felines and break. I think my Dad finally found a way to fasten down the panels adjacent to the fridge to make entry for the felines much more difficult. The Siamese Smokey was also adept at opening cupboard doors if he thought it was worth his time, what a clever angel he was….

Good memories, because of the previous experiences I remember that in the ’90s my sister asked a rental agent at an apartment complex if they had any kitchens “without” the false ceilings one time as she knew her 2 cats would definitely eat into her damage deposit with those in place, she ended up at another rental with a normal ceiling which also allowed cats.

A little white cat with feathery wings on Lupin’s right side warns him to stay still and purr, whilst, on the left side, a little horned cat with a red pitchfork beckons him, “Give in to your dark impulses and go CRAAAAAAZY! And while you’re at it, boop Elvis on the nose. You know you want to.” What is a Cat of Adventure to do???

Just the other day, I was telling a friend about my Thanksgiving week a couple of decades ago. I hard ordered and received a $30 sugar-free pecan pie. I set it on to of my refrigerator. It had been up there a couple of days. I was watching TV in the living room when I heard something hit the kitchen floor. I went into the kitchen and there was the pie on the floor upside down — luckily in its plastic. And, on top of the refrigerator was Roli Poli, giving me his “That didn’t belong up here!” face.

Cats are very good at making that face, aren’t they. My best hopes for The Woman.

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Queen Catshepsut the Golden: Has anyone seen Lupinium around anywhere?

Puckmosis: Last I saw him, he was napping in the impossibly tiny box room.

Elvis-Anum: Yes, Dr. Mews advised him to take it easy for awhile.

Beatrixia: For him that means limit zoomies and thwumps to once daily.

    Enter Thomios

Thomios: Sorry lunch is a bit late this afternoon. We were hit by a small white tornado.

The Queen: Sounds like someone is on the mend.

    Sending best wishes to Lupin—KK

Katie had her Spa day at the vet yesterday. She has those days, once a month. She gets her nails trimmed [pedicure] and her hair combed [knots removed]. It takes stealth and cunning to get her into the carrier. For all of her fighting and arguing, she comes home sleek and lovely. I should have named her Raggedy Ann instead of Katie.

I hope the woman is able to save all the glasses from breakage and Lupin from himself.

Slightly off topic, some idiot (possibly the city) set off a barrage of fireworks yesterday evening. Yum Yum has heard them before and is OK with the noise (she knows she is safe), but Smudge went berserk, running around the apartment screeching his head off. He finally buried himself under the bed for a while.

And even if the Woman gets all the glasses down before Lupin goes “full wild card” and explodes out, he might explode in a downward direction thus scoring a hit on all the glasses lined up on the counter. Stay tuned for live coverage from the scene.

Update from Georgia: “This good boy is getting the hang of his meds (pill pockets have been a godsend). Every day he seems just a little stronger. I’m still trying to find a veterinary cardiologist in the greater Seattle area that can see him before September 2022 or at all. (That’s the earliest appointment I have found locally. I’ve been told there is a shortage of vet cardiologists out here. I’m currently trying to connect with any Seattle vet cardiologists that travel to vet offices . If anyone out there knows of one, I’d love to have their contact info!) In the meanwhile, the meds Blue Pearl prescribed seem to be helping! He has been resting a lot, and if he jumps from one more precarious height to another precarious height I’m going to need heart meds ,…but all things considered, he’s doing a lot better than last week. I’m so grateful for each day with this sweet guy.”

Lupin way up high, well that’s what you are

Habits we decry, yeah, you’ve gone too far

So, won’t you please come down tonight

Lupin way up high, with glasses

Come down tonight, come down tonight

    Breaking everything in sight

Gives the whole family such fright

Lupin, no surprise, hey that’s what you are

Cats of adventure always raise the bar

But, it’s quite unwise, please come down tonight

Lupin way up high, what you aiming for?

A circus of a-horror, yeah-yeah, well that’s what you are

    You make us gulp antacids

I guess she’ll just move the glasses

HI everyone I have cheerful news today. I went back to the local shelter and picked up a new addition to the pack. His name is Ruke and he is a 1yo Snowshoe. He had a sad start in life but now things will be going his way. His original people moved and left him outside to fend for himself (sounds like poor Goldie) the neighbors fed him for awhile then called PETA who picked him up neutered him and sent him to my shelter. He is a bit of a food hog so I have to be careful of how much I feed him. He is the sweetest cat. He gives hugs and kisses, love nips too. He still has a little quarantine left in the spare bedroom then he will officially meet the rest of the pack. I really hope he likes Jasper the Great Dane. Jasper will love him.

We once lived in a house where the below the counter cupboards were all connected. We had a cat who could open cupboard doors. He got to the cupboard with the bread by cupboard traversal. We had to move the bread to a secure location.

I now use canning jars (the ones spaghetti sauce comes in) as glasses. Between my being a Klutz and having wayyyyyy too many cats all the glasses got broken and I’m just not about to buy anything new. None of my mugs have handles (same reasons). We are all happy with the arrangement! When something breaks beyond use, I jump for joy. One less thing to clean.
