I hate long expositions in writings to boost word count. I tend to skip them and don’t lose a thing in understanding the story. This goes for some movies too. The middle is boring and adds nothing, so I skip ahead to the later parts to see the conclusion.
A well-written book or movie is just as much fun when you know the ending as when you don’t. Those are the books worth the re-read, or the movies worth the re-watch. We all know Westley and Buttercup humiliate Prince Humperdink and Inigo kills Rugen before they all get away, but it’s still fun to read or watch The Princess Bride multiple times.

Sometimes the early parts are better in both media than the wrap-up.

That is the problem with reading history. We’ve read the back of the book. We know the spoilers,. We know how things turn out.
History looks a lot different when you can travel back in time and look forward through it as a resident of the place and time.
