Good news—by 2AM, Wallace’s parents will start looking for him and when they don’t find him playing pinball at the Snug Harbor Bar & Grill, they’ll check in at Spud’s.

Clearly, lots of us love the Wallace offerings.

These little vignettes are just so perfect.

Panel 4 is more than a plot twist or a surprise ending. (Hitchcock and O. Henry had those down pat.) It’s more like one of Churchill’s periodic sentences in that it is not logically or grammatically complete until the very end when it condenses, coalesces into the perfect brain-tickling >>KER-BLAMMO!<<

The first three panels establish the question, tease possible answers, and then (it’s worth repeating)

    /ₖₑᵣ₋ᵦₗₐₘₘₒ!/

and it all makes sense. And also, assuming you are not dead, is hilarious.

Wallace examining his fingernails is also perfect. And the fact that Wallace, Spud, and Gull-Boy… all haunt one another. Gary should take note.

    About periodic sentences:

“The idea is to throw the mind forward to the idea which will complete the meaning. This sentence arouses interest and curiosity, holds an idea in suspense before its final revelation is made. The periodic sentence is reserved [so as not to overtax the reader] for emphatic statements and to secure variety.” (Jana Reid)

C’mon, Spud, deep down you enjoy hanging with Wallace too. Otherwise, you surely would’ve put your foot down on that association years ago.

It wouldn’t be out of character for Spud to use a night cap to keep his pillow clean.
