Want a cheap stay in Hawaii? Take a pup tent and a light sleeping bag. You can stay on the beach and live like the homeless. There’s showers with hot water and they feed everyone breakfast and supper free. Down side is the crazy people may not be happy you’re there, just keep a baseball bat handy.

I just saw an interesting bit on where the word “Hobo” came from. After the Civil War, many men, having no home to go back to and looking for difficult to find work, hit the roads and railways. It means “Homeward Bound”…

Author/journalist Christopher Buckley (yes, that one) spent some time in his youth working on tramp steamers, and wrote a (non-fiction) book about it, “Steaming to Bamboola” (that’s how one of his shipmates pronounced “Bermuda”). It could be grueling work, but it was as “romantic” as you might imagine. I read it when I was about 16, and this Midwestern boy who had never seen the ocean heard the “Call of the Sea” loud and clear…

I know someone who took a freighter to Hawaii. He asked the captain whether or not he was allowed to ride his motorcycle on the deck. The captain asked why. He responded that he wanted to ride his motorcycle to all 50 states. The captain said that was fine but not to expect the ship to stop and pick him up if he fell off.
