Earl, was that a wow he called me Dude or what is Dude? Is it an insult?

What was the equivalent to “dude” in Earl’s growing-up years? “Chap”?

Hey Dude, don’t let yourself down,

Earl is always focusing on the wrong thing.

Earl, you had better be more ready to say something next time that young whippersnapper says something like that again.

When you speak and use “dude” /you risk getting booed /as some people find it /both rude and crude.

Back in my day, a dude was someone who couldn’t ride a horse, or someone wet behind the ears, or someone fresh out of school, or someone new at the job, or ….

There must be 50 ways to call your Grandpa.

That’s OK, Earl. Mine have called me dude, and also dudesicle (which I also call them), but usually they go with my official title – Granddude.

I suspect I’m about Earl’s age. The word I remember from the 60’s might have been ‘man’ usually with a preface like ‘hey, man.’ A little before that— since Beatnik slang blended into hippy slang— guy was a ‘cat’ and a girl was a ‘chick.’

It’s better than being called POPS or GRAMPS.
