Damn small destroyer, even for those times. We had three regular cooks, an overnight baker and another one in charge of supplies and organization. They did pretty well considering what they had to work with and 190-225 crew.
My third grade school was desegregated the year before I started there. I loved the cafeteria staff! My Mom did too. They introduced me to okra, collards, sweet potato pie, and even chitlins (delicious, but I don’t like to smell them cooking.) They even did a real pit barbeque.

I suspect that joke is a bit old.
I mean like, “got his award from the Spanish Armada” old.
