The really tough one for me was when a young woman offered to load my roller duffel on the shuttle bus at the airport. Yes, I accepted her offer and thanked her. Gotta accept change.
I don’t think anyone has ever called me “Sir”, but I’ve never considered either that or “Ma’am” to be indicative of age, and I don’t have a particularly “commanding” presence.
But it wouldn’t bother me one way or another. I certainly don’t consider being of any particular age to be a something bad. And for what it’s worth, the same is true of all the women in my family.
This is just a rite of passage. The first time someone called me ma’am, I was in my thirties taking enrichment classes at a community college. It didn’t upset me, but it was just strange. However, to a person in their late teens, someone in their thirties does look kind of old.

When I started to be called “sir”, it really annoyed me! So i told them not to, it worked for quite a while!
