Extending the hand of peace to the enemy,This is from a story I wrote:
My dad told me a story once about the War. I never half believed it. It was Christmas Eve 1914. The War which had supposed to have lasted 6 weeks had been going on for 5 months and already a stalemate. The sun had set and in deference to the holiday, the shelling had stopped. How the Germans and our side had come to this agreement, wasn’t known.
The silence was eerie and one could hear the noises from the trenches on the other side. Suddenly a voice rose in song soon joined by others. The tune was familiar, but the words were in German. “Stille Nacht.” My father’s mates counter-attacked with “Silent Night.”
A volley of “O Tanenbaum” and “Oh Christmas Tree” followed. Soon both sides were singing their respective hymns in harmony.
Later in the evening, the sentries cried out, There was a solitary figure making its way across no man’s land. He bore aloft not a flag of truce but a tiny fir tree lit with candles. A runner was dispatched from our side to meet him.
The two men met, talked and shook hands. Then without order or orders men came out of the trenches on both sides. Under a flare-lit sky they met. Mostly they knew little of each other’s language, yet the conversed and shared goodies like chocolates and cigarettes and even showed pictures of their loved ones.
Somehow a battered football appeared and the sides had a spirited match.
Except for the uniforms, it was difficult to tell who was friend and who was foe. The “Hun” had a face and a name and a family. Both ends of the rifle were the same.
For a brief while in a world of insanity, peace broke out. These privates and corporals and sergeants who couldn’t even speak each others’ languages succeeded where diplomats and heads of state failed. Needless to say, the higher headquarters and political leaders on both sides disapproved and saw to it that it would never happen again.
From this I learned that politicians start wars and force soldiers to finish them: those who call the shots are not the ones being shot: a bloody insane system.
Wasn’t this originally black and white as it was a daily strip rather than a Sunday strip? I’m gussing those black stripes were supposed to be red in the original.

That’s sweet of the cat. Then again, cats can’t taste sugar, so maybe it mistook the candy for a brittle plastic cane.

Black stripes might mean a licorice candy cane. This would not be a friendly gesture, to me.

Well, at least it is a beginning. I still feel that Linus should be the go between.

I guess that it is time for Snoopy to do a little soft-shoe dance with his new cane.

Snoopy made a good choice, despite colorist issues.

Yuk. An already licked candy cane stuck to his paw. Do you realize what a cat does with its tongue? Double yuk.

It’s a candy cane… roll with it.

You still have a hand, Snoopy. Consider that a Christmas miracle.
Decepticomic almost 3 years ago
Whether that’s a kind gesture depends on how bad it is for dogs to eat candy canes. Not that I suggest testing that.
