My dog sleeps about 18-20 hours a day, usually. I do know they sometimes just are on “idle” and will instantly react to anything. Other times, mine is clearly deeply asleep, and either snoring, snorting like a pig, and/or tongue is slightly hanging out. I remember my cats slept almost all the time too, except when I wanted to sleep around 3a.
Cats have evolved for maximum energy efficiency. There’s no point staying awake all day or all night when your prey moves about in the hours near sunrise and sunset.
