Several years ago my next door neighbor thought it would be a great idea to get free compost from the city. Ringling Brothers Circus was appearing at the Coliseum, and what he received was a load of straw/manure from the animals (think elephants, horses, etc.)….. which was dumped at the end of his driveway, blocking him in. Luckily it was in February not the heat of summer.
Dig a hole. Stick your face in it and sniff. That’s what finished compost should smell like; dirt. If the compost smells bad, it isn’t finished, and will be bad for things planted in it.
