Note: the Star of Bethlehem is often incorrectly said to be in the east. The Bible story actually places the Magi in the east when they saw it, and it led them to the west.
I was raised a California boy, and have never been to New York, but even I knew what Gracie Mansion was. To be fair, however, my mother was from Brooklyn so I was well versed in all things NYC. When I saw this, I immediately wondered how many readers would understand it.
The comic is dated 1971. Without bothering to look it up to refresh my memory, I recall that John Lindsey was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the 1972 election, and his switching parties to run was a newsworthy topic. So this would be timely.
I remember a political cartoon that showed John Lindsey leaping off a passing elephant onto the back of a donkey already crowded with Democratic Party hopefuls.
Does anyone remember in the old “Batman” TV series, where Commissioner Gordon makes reference to “Mayor Linseed” and “Governor Stonefeller”? (and he did it with a straight face!)
