My cat got into our basement ceiling a few times (I think I finally have all the entrances blocked), I was always worried he was going to get trapped somewhere and I’d have to knock holes in the ceiling to get him out.
I had a ferret that crawled into a space under the kitchen cabinets and we couldn’t get her except if we wanted to have someone come in to rip them all out, so we had to lure her out. It took a couple of hours, but she finally made her way back out of there. We learned our lesson and would close off the kitchen when we let her run around for her daily exercise.

Something tells me that “Oh no!” of Dean’s dad means that someone found something he didn’t want discovered by others. Just a theory.

Try using food as a bait. It usually works.

That hole was huge. I’d also be worried that they have rats.
