There’s about a five mile straight flat section of highway near here. I was still a teenager, dad was driving and I was sitting in the passenger seat. When we came over the hill onto the section of highway I pretended to push the " pedal to the metal ". Dad looked at me and said " You’re going to get a lot of speeding tickets"
Heh, with the fourth panel, I can imagine any other drivers seeing the small spray of yellow hair in the drivers’ seat and saying in horror “Holy ****, there’s a kid behind the wheel!”
When my oldest was about 4 or 5 our family moved from Wyoming to Chicago. The wife and I had a bet going on how far we would go before we heard the first “Are we there yet, Daddy?” We made it 30 miles.
Well, that’s as good a daydream as I could have come up with in the back of the car staring at the backs of the seats in front of me because I was too short to see out the window.
That there is a lot of real fine comic artwork! Look at the detail in every frame. If you are reading this Bill, we miss your talent and creativity!Thank you so much!
“Times Fun When Having Flies”. 1940 when I was 4, we left my Grandfather’s cottage on Lake Sunapee NH to drive home to Chatham NJ in our 1939 Lincoln Zepher with mohair fabric on the seats. I got car sick dizzy looking out the back windows after too many blue berry muffins for breakfast. What a mess for my parents to clean up.
Grew up on a farm and learned to drive at a young age. I heard from neighbors about kids driving who were so little that they couldn’t see out of the windshield and push the gas at the same time. Builds character.
Roadtrips are just a matter of DIRT. Distance Is Rate multipled by Time. If you know two of the three you can solve for the last one. At a rest stop on a road trip when the girls were about 9 or 10 I explained to them how they could figure out when we would get there. “We have to get this far and we will be going at this speed.” The next time they asked “When will we get there?” I gave them our speed and the approximate distance. They were able to tell what time of day we would get there and with another small lesson, how long we would have to drive not counting rest stops or meal break. On later trips they became very good at planning and estimating the time and doing other support. One even used a stopwatch to figure out how much time was spent driving and how much was not. They took pride in their navigational skills.
The “Are we there yet” phenomena is how I got into studying maps and getting really good at navigation…the time somehow passed much more quickly if I could track the progress myself.
Does anyone realize that the vehicle actually has a clutch? Good for them! I hope that when/if Calvin does learn to drive, he is taught how to drive a standard shift. Makes the driver much more in tune with the car.

Calvin can drive with a clutch? I haven’t driven a standard shift in a quarter century.
