If you don’t read, learning to write is almost impossible. I noticed that the very idea of reading sounds like punishment for most of the young people I know. :(
How many teachers want to teach but the “system” says, “Oh, no you can’t”? On the flip side, I get parents (I am one) are busy. But is watching the boob tube more important than helping with your child’s education at home? No replies needed.
I thought they weren’t allowed to teach kid how to write anymore (handwriting) as it would make them feel bad if it was a bit messy. They don’t teach cursive, and I could tell even with my kids’ handwriting they didn’t teach the ‘correct’ way to form letters- circles like “o” are made in a clockwise motion and letters and numbers start from the base and go up. :( And my kids are in their 30’s.
What I have noticed is the kids don’t seem to know how to hold a pen (pencil) correctly. We were taught the thumb, forefinger and middle finger. I guess nowadays, anyway, as long as it’s comfortable. (:~{

Time to take a hard look at how you pass along knowledge and skills yourself or at least how you have packaged them.

One of the things I miss since my mom passed was reading my students’ writing to her as I graded it.
