Agnes’s quotation struck me as familiar, but I couldn’t locate a prior citation. Googling “tradition taskmaster” of course led me to a few discussions of “Fiddler on the Roof,” since Tevye over the course of the play learns just how harsh a taskmaster “tradition” can be. “This is how we have always done it” can be a useful shortcut, but it doesn’t follow that “This is how we must always do it.”
