Arlo has learned the basics of super-villainy. Explain your dastardly plans to the hero/ine in great detail (instead of getting on with it) and follow up with an evil laugh. Curse when foiled by hero/ine.
Before retirement, I was in banking. One day, I saw an item in a financial publication that claimed that the European Union had passed a bill to eliminate checks. Cash still remains, but card and electronic payments are encouraged.
Interestingly, I have not yet been able to verify the article’s claims in other publications.
There’s a few holdouts, mostly small businesses, like the company that does my roof and gutters, and the people who built the base for our greenhouse. And for reasons, my credit union has to send a check to the power company, although for the two prior houses, the payment was electronic. Means I have to remember to “pre-date” the payment online.
To enable my financial advisor to deposit money in our checking account we had to email him the routing number, the account number, and an image of a voided check for our account. I was just glad he didn’t need an eye of newt.
…..at 86 y/o, my heirs will have one helluva time unscrewing all my ‘online auto-pay’ stuff, but there’s ONE credit card that will be easy for them to fix.. The dam thing kept ‘forgetting’ to auto-charge my bank acc’t, thus incurring late charges that took months to reconcile. So I pay them by check and snail mail. Another damnable thing is what Arlo’s laffin’ about is that "in order to proceed, we must text a one-use only password to your wireless phone number (enter here) " In MY case it means I’d have to struggle to the car, get to a WalMart, buy a smartphone, register, establish an IP, it’s phone #. type it into my PC screen and then move on, only to find the page has ‘timed out.’.. and to think…. I used to BUILD and maintain these boxes of transistors… (grumble-mutter-cuss-fume)
You all do realize that when you pay with plastic or a digital service, we all are paying for that “service”? The percentage charged is added to the “real” cost of your purchase. Not so with paper. I only use a credit card when I HAVE to when paying for something online.
Husband just came down and I mentioned this discussion. He reminded me.
Before the pandemic we paid for daily lunch at Wendys with cash (he likes eating there, cheap enough so I don’t argue about it – that’s why we went there). So when we went on Friday night to a local Asian buffet we had always cash to leave a tip – one pays when one goes in and we charge that, but tip can’t be put on the card and one tips when they leave.
One week back when the pandemic was abating (before it got worse again) he called and checked what the Asian buffet was doing – gloves and masks were required – and he decided we such go for dinner (on a Thursday night instead of Friday as it would emptier of customers). As we were finishing dinner it dawned on him that he did not have any singles in his wallet as we had not paid cash for anything in over a year and a half. Luckily when I looked in my wallet I found I had enough singles for what he needed.

The wife handles it all, writing checks and keeping track of everything to the penny, but if it was to me everything would have to be on autopay.

I think Janis meant to say, “I sent an image of the check to the bank yesterday.”
