Ah, I remember this! Good to see the original. Clearly the Norwegian translators found it untranslateable, so they changed it to “Pass the postman,” and then “poor postman.”
All together now, let’s sing: Over hill, over dale, we will hit the dusty trail and the caissons go rolling along. In and out, hear them shout counter march and right about, and the caissons go rolling along.
Speaking of chipmunks (Chip & Dale), I’ve noticed that when I’m on a bike path (Rails to Trails), that a lot of chipmunks enjoy a game of ‘chicken’ with bike riders. They will sit on the side of the path, and wait for a cyclist to get within 25-30 feet, then make a mad dash across the path, sometimes narrowly getting missed. Must be quite a rush for them. I’ve only seen 1 or 2 who “miss timed the event” over the many years, so they are quite good at it.
If Charlie Brown can survive getting hit with a baseball multiple times in every game he’s in without suffering brain trauma, Dale can survive being run over by a bike… So yeah, Dale’s probably dead.
His mother is a menace to all life, everywhere. If she’s not soaking the kid in a downpour or driving through potholes, she’s taking out pedestrians. Mom: get a stationary bike.
the Van Pelt family children are very interesting. Lucy, Linus, and Rerun. But after these strips first appeared it was more evident why they were the way they were. Fussbudget, philosopher, and back seat comedian!
I used to know a guy who had been in the artillery. He had the misfortune of being named Dale. Every time the music for their anthem started up the other guys looked at him when they sang, “Over hill, over Dale we will hit the dusty trail.”

Dale??…. What about Roy Rodgers? Doesn’t he need his Dale?

I don’t think Schulz is talking about Dale Earnhardt since Earnhardt only started racing in 1975. My guess is he had a crush on Dale Evans.

This gag made it into one of the later Peanuts animated specials. I think it was the Christmas special made not long after Schulz’ passing.

Ok, so when it rains, the panel turns magenta (my comment from yesterday), and when we turn Dale into asphalt, it goes yellow.
Got it.

I went to high school with a guy named Dale. I think that’s the ONLY Dale I’ve ever known. Did Mrs. Van Pelt take them all out ?

No, OVER Dale, like in driving over a roadway. Sometimes it happens, even on a bike.
