Every once in awhile I’ll step up to a register or a hostess at a restaurant and think “wow, what luck, there’s nobody here!”. Then turn around and there’ll be a dozen people behind me.

I get the urge when a cute cashier asks if she can take me here, to say “Honey, you can take me anywhere!”

That’s how you summon customers all right. I do it when I’m bored and need something to do.

Customer clusterology has proved that customers arrive in groups or not at all. Sometimes it’s due to things like meal times in restaurants. Other times it’s not so easy to explain.

“The public is lumpy!” -Me after my first retail job. Like bad gravy it has thin and thick spots with occasional indigestible dry spots.

Other times this happens…… 1) It has been slow for hours upon hours. The manager asks if anyone would like to leave early (so they don’t pay people to stand there). As soon as the cashiers have their tills counted and are almost out the door, BAM!! A ton of people come out of nowhere, all angry and wanting to know why there aren’t more cashiers.

    2) There are two cashiers. One has to go to the bathroom, needs a break, or Lunch. It has been slow, so the other tells them to go ahead. As soon as that cashier leaves, BAM! People out of nowhere. When the other cashier comes back, it is completely dead again.

    3) You are a cashier. You are given some things to stock that are in the first aisle by the register. Things are dead, so you go to the end of the aisle and put one item on the shelf. You turn and see a customer, so you go to check them out. That customer complains “I have been standing here for 10 minutes!”. You, of course, are not allowed to say that is impossible for you just left the register, so you have to apologize for making them wait.

    I so don’t miss retail….sigh..
