Boys are doctors an girls are cheerleaders. What?? No! No! No! No! No! Girls can be doctors, too, Zoe! They can also be lawyers, pharmacists, teachers, firefighters, artists, writers, police officers... Girls can be whatever they want! What can boys be? Usually whatever girls want them to be. Don't complicate this, okay?

Sorry, Wanda, girls can’t be whatever they want. Neither can boys. They may want to have a certain job, and that’s fine, but sometimes a person just doesn’t have the talent, aptitude or temperament for it.
Some jobs, such as police officer, require minimums of height and weight. If you’re not tall enough, nothing will make you grow once you’ve reached your adult height.
Someone may want to be a basketball pro, but doesn’t have the athletic ability and no amount of practice would help. Another person may want to be a great painter, but lacks artistic skill or imagination.
Sometimes, a person can’t get their desired job through no fault of their own. There are thousands of men and women who have tremendous acting talents, but never become famous movie or stage stars simply because they could never “get their foot in the door.” There are many talented writers who never get a novel published simply because they can’t get an agent to even look at their work.
The right time and the right place just never come together to make their desires a reality.
So, kids may aspire to be something and if they’re willing to put in the hours of learning and training required, they may attain their goal. But realistically, not everyone can be whatever they want.
