It has been said that Olympic athletes who earn the silver are less satisfied than those who win the bronze. The reasoning goes that silver medalists have the feeling they were “so close” to winning gold, whereas bronze winners feel they were “so close” to not winning anything at all.
Wonder if Mom was trying to live out; her own dreams through Dana? We’ve all seen the crazy behavior of some helicopter parents, when it comes to kids & athletics.
As the often-second-place speller in any school I went to, I feel your self-inflicted pain. My friends — especially the ones who couldn’t pass a spelling test without studying — never understood. Neither did my parents; they were proud of second place! For me, though, it felt like I was almost-best but never the best. As a grown-up now, of course, I do understand much better.
It amazes me how some parents treat their children like failures when they bring home a silver or bronze. Never mind that they made the top three! Most athletes never make it to the podium!

We are never going to hate Eunice as much as you did, Dana. Give it up.
