I distinctly remember a time (in the early 70s, I think) watching some Loony Toons on TV. The joke would be set up — the anvil is falling or the dynamite fuse is burning down or the truck is speeding — and then the cartoon would cut to the next scene — no clang of the anvil, no boom or dynamite, no whack of the car. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner, Tweety — it didn’t matter.
Other shows were just as bad. It was about this same time there was a big push to steer kids away from toy guns. Fortunately, my brother and I already had a good collection, but we probably would have used sticks if we had to.
Video game violence is far more graphic than anything shown in those cartoons.
