I never got up on the roof to help my dad with these kinds of things – his view was (and remains) that it’s better to have at least one person on the “crew” bracing the ladder and holding the cell phone to call EMS if someone were to fall.
I never had to get on the roof to put up the Christmas lights. They were (and are) just strung along the eaves — easily reached with a step ladder — and draped over the bushes in front of the house.
