I read the original “Adventures of Pinocchio” story when I was about 10. It is actually quite grim. I think people who only know the Disney version would be horrified to read it. At one point, Pinocchio falls asleep by the fire and burns his feet off. He throws a hammer at the cricket and kills him. The cricket later shows up as a ghost. Pinocchio bites the hand off a cat that tries to rob him, He gets hung. The Blue Fairy is dead for part of the story. And this is only a small sample. Read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, but it might give you nightmares.
