I got along great with my Late mother-in-law. She was so glad that her daughter found a sucker to take her off her hands.

But Joanie being his mother in law is only a minor after the fact thing. Joanie is in his life on her own as a friend that he meets at the beginning of the whole dang comic strip, while they were at Walden! (this is dumb)

Joanie is a long time friend from long before becoming his mom-in-law. Inviting ex’es is just spiteful to them and aggravating to the future spouse.

Kim fails to realize that Mike’s ex-mother-in-law is also Alex’s current maternal grandmother. :-|

On a separate note, I don’t think there’s much room to dispute that Alex [as a child] tends to be drawn rather androgynously. Is that just for the heck of it, or is there some “significance” to it?

Good wedding rule. No kids allowed. Unless they are owned by the bride or groom, or both. Of course that never works. Nobody likes wedding cake better than kids.

They need to include Alex on the guest list. She pretty much set up their relationship.

If he actually had a friendship with his former mother-in-law and she continues to wish him well, her invitation would be perfectly valid. The trouble with old boyfriends is that old boyfriends can be trouble. It depends a lot of why they stopped being a boyfriend.

What’s that all about? “Well Kim, I met her when she was leaving her husband and jumped on my motorcycle to join Mark and me on our road trip to find America.”

I’m pretty sure that Alex’s reaction in the last frame is not about her grandmother, but because she herself is “associated with Mike’s past romantic history”.

For our wedding, we basically invited everyone we knew, including past romantic partners, several of whom showed up and wished us well. Amicable partings aren’t just for comic strips, y’know.

Joanie may be Mike’s ex mother-in-law, but she is also Alex’s grandmother so she is family.

Hey, Kim, the former Mother in law is also Alex’s wonderful grandmother. Though, over the years, she has proven to be a mediocre parent.

I’m not sure that Joanie should be invited just because she’s Alex’s grandmother. But I do see that a lot of people know their Doonesbury history. And in panel two, Mike could have explained that he was friends with Joanie before he met her daughter, so it’s reasonable to invite her.

Uh, Joanie is Alex’s grandma. And was Mike’s friend/mentor before he met J.J. Joanie should be invited.
