Sounds like my brother…if he doesn’t know what it is he changes it to suit him.

Men never know anything about crafts and womens’ things. My husband will always call a skirt a dress or crocheting knitting, he doesn’t know the difference.

For some reason I have this vague feeling I don’t want my pillow “smocked”.

Smocking the pillow means that Opal is sewing the pillow with different kinds of colorful threads for decorations on the pillow.

Wildmustang1262 says: Smocking the pillow means that Opal is sewing the pillow with different kinds of colorful threads for decorations on the pillow.

I thought it primarily meant gathering up the fabric while sewing (different colored thread optional).

RRAmom: You’re right. When you are smocking, you create whatever design you want for that pillow, such as diamond. Not just one diamond but rows of diamonds across the pillow. Smocking can also be done on a dress, usually to the bodice and nowadays mostly on little girls dresses. You also find it on baptismal gowns for babies.

PS - At each point of the diamond, the fabric is gathered. This is the smocking part.
