That was Hollywood’s idea of Kansas. The writers and directors had probably never set foot in the state. The black and white changing to color trick was done to show a contrast between Dorothy’s impression of her farm life and the beauty and wonder of Oz.
I’ve lived here all my life (so far) and never had a regret about it. There’s plenty of color all around.
