The soap operas on TV were aimed at women, using social problems and situations.

I used to have a sitter who liked to watch The Soaps. To this day, the girls call them “the crying lady shows”.

When I was in high school I had to read “The Great Gatsby”. When I reported on it I asked “Where are the spaceships? Where are the aliens?” The teacher was not amused.

In my teenage years, the TV soaps started up around 3 PM, just about the time we’d begin arriving back home. I was rather partial to “Another World” that is, until the old Star Trek reruns started up.

Perhaps there would be more soaps on the air today if they’d been directed by Michael Bay.

If they didn’t have space aliens, I didn’t want to watch them.

Things do indeed explode on soap operas. Fragile egos, fidelity, arrogance, vaneness, narcissism etc.

Grandma S. always watched As The World Turns. During one family get-together grandma was going on and on about the things ‘those people’ were doing. She was naming names and talking about all these different events happening. Nobody could figure out who or what grandma was talking about. After some time my mom started giggling. She realized grandma was talking about ‘her story’, the soap opera.

Never could get into the Soaps, even when I was familiar with an actor or a network exec-in-charge. But I don’t exactly buy into Nerwin’s reasoning, either….
