And what’s wrong with a smithy? It’s a great hobby. You can make all sorts of cool stuff including the tools for everyone else’s hobbies. Far as I’m concerned it’s as much fun as you can have with all your clothes on.
Craftsmanship counts. One of my favorite possessions, and much favored by my wife in her time, is a simple single piece blade-through riveted wood handle knife, hand made of Stellite steel (back when Union Carbide still owned the name). Larger than paring, smaller than butcher, used for either.
