For the longest time, clothing was fastened by tying laces together. Then the button was invented, but it was initially available only to the wealthy. Gentlemen fastened their own shirt buttons, but ladies had maids to do it for them, and then as now most people were right-handed, which is why, to this day, buttons on men’s and women’s clothing are on opposite sides of the garment.
