If you hold the nail you intend to hit with a hammer with your pointer finger and middle finger (with your finger nails away from you and the hammer) instead of the “normal” way (with your thumb and pointer finger), if/when you accidentally miss hitting the nail and hit your fingers instead, it won’t hurt nearly as much.
my dad had large hands and could not always hold the nail w/ his fingers so he used needle nose plyers. i have save many finger injuries doing the same over the years
