If they’re gonna play tic-tac-toe that way, they should just play Pentae.

There was an interesting NPR segment some while ago, in which a team went all over the world to find out if people were familiar with “tic-tac-toe”. By and large not (one New Zealander—"Is it a dance?"), at least not by that name. In the British Commonwealth by and large the game is known as “Naughts [noughts] and crosses”, for example. Which has the merit of making sense: “tic-tac-toe” is basically nonsense. The New Oxford American Dictionary (which comes packaged in Apple computers) says the name dates from the 1960s, which is just silly. Especially since the OED records an example in writing from 1884.

I suppose the tic-tac-toe research was an add-on to some weightier project, I can’t imagine getting funding for the tic-tac-toe investigation per se. (George Soros maybe?)
