I used to carry one routinely. Then I was forced to discard a really nice one that had been given to me by a customer because I had it with me when I went to board a plane.
If you get a Swiss army type, some of the tools included are really useful.
They changed the formula on those packs of cheese & crackers, used to be you needed a knife or the little plastic stick to spread the cheese, now the cheese is gooey and you just dip the crackers into it, no more plastic sticks. It’s gross and I’ll never eat them again.
When the TSA first banned knives on planes, I had my leatherman with me. I put it into the little basket. The agent asked what it was. I opened it up and said my job involves repairing industrial instruments, then showed her the pliers and screwdrivers. I didn’t mention the knife, saw, or scissors. I got to keep it. They’re smarter now.
I carried either that one, or it’s more modern replacements, every work day until I retired. On average, I surmise I used it an average of once per week to fix something – not just opening mail or slicing fruit.
A streetwise friend who grew up in DC, taught me you learn early to always carry your ‘shit’ (said he was 10 at the time and called it a “Black Thing”) It has come in handy many times over the 40 years I have found…That makes me certain OJ Simpson (who grew up in inner city San Francisco) found his ‘shit’ useful that one evening.

I will stop carrying a knife when they stop wasting plastic on consumer-proof packaging.

As a friend of mine once asked me suddenly: “Hey, hand me your toadsticker for a second!” Took me a second. (I had no toadsticker.)
