    Only 300 acres??

I guess Agnes wants a small farm, not a plantation.

We needed a guy to bale our two acres of pasture every year. Had to pay him and give him the hay both.

If I had the money for all that stuff, I’d retire, not start a farm

I doubt they have enough money for any of that, even the hot dog steamer. If they did have all that money, they wouldn’t need to go through all the toil and labor required to run the farm.

I had to look up “pole barn”, interesting…

“The name ‘pole barn’ stems from the 1930s. Due to a disrupted economy from the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, farmers turned to the most cost-efficient materials they could to construct new buildings: recycled telephone poles.”

I had no idea what a pole barn is! Thanks, Tony :)

A lot of my ancestors were farmers too. Shame on me :) I remember riding on my Great-Uncle Leland’s tractor with him, that was so fun! And we have an old movie of him and Granny making sausage, with the Morton’s salt container very visible. Used to say we should send that to them and see if they wanted to use it in a commercial… paying us for it, of course :)

    Hot dog steamer?

Maybe Trout’s mom has taken her to a pick-your-own farm. I’ve been to several, and they typically have anything from a small snack counter to a substantial general store that sells all kinds of produce and farm-related goods. Could be that’s where she got the idea that a hot dog steamer is a standard part of farm life.
