I got my AKC, champion hunter beagle for $100 when she was 6. I then spent $1500 in medical care, as she had one rabies shot in her life, had a broken tooth, worms, teeth cleaning, nails clipped, and needed to be spayed. She had just left 8 weeks old puppies and was in heat again. I still consider her a bargain and worth anything that comes up for her care. I was not even given her AKC papers, just a copy, but it doesn’t matter as she was not having more babies. I did get her certified as a therapy dog and also an AKC canine good citizen. This dog loves everyone. She was so pleased that a dove allowed her to stand still at a 6’ distance yesterday and just hang for a few minutes. I froze at the other end of the leash. It was cute to see.
I have a brother we called “the blue light special” (Kmart reference) because, at the time, mom and dad only had to pay for the birth certificate when he was born…
I remember the days when people did give puppies away for free, that was over sixty years ago. We had beautiful mutts, that today might be called some weird name. They were with us for over fifteen years.
Our last two dogs were bought from the city shelter, for over $200.00 each, plus we had to promise to have them spayed. So in the end the cost was over $500.00 each. When we brought in the proof, the city gave us $100.00 credit toward the next year’s shots. Luckily they were very healthy and we didn’t have other large medical bills outside of the regular check-ups and vaccines.

it’s not the sticker price that kills you Poncho, it is the maintenance!

No such thing as a free puppy, especially after it eats your sofa.

Don’t tell Fish. He cost nine cents, and we don’t want him getting uppity about it.
